POETRY - SOCIETY - RELATIONSHIPS

It is common knowledge that society is full of relationships among itself. For instance, we can focus and try to observe carefully the behaviour of people in schools; teachers and students. If we go inside of a teachers’ room, in whichever kind of school, we could notice that there exist a small society which lets us realize the way they relate each other, the way they behave, talk, think and feel, etc. Teachers usually feel safe in their place of work; in this case the teachers’ room. Here they can express what they want without being worried that a student could hear their private conversations, which most of times have a lot to do with their own students. On the other hand, we can find how the students’ relationships in a classroom are. Students typically do not respect each other; they fight without reasonable motivations, etc. But at the same time they build memorable friendships and they support each other.

Besides, we can relate each other with people we do not know. For example, when we are walking on the street we are in contact with others even if we do not want to. But, this relationship is the one which makes us think about how able are we to relate with others and to perceive the other. In this case it is important to say that we are not used to talk easily with someone who we don not know or while we are in a bus in the way to work or study we never tend, and even think, to talk to the person placed next to us. There could be many possibilities which could cause these kinds of reactions like; being shy, having nothing to say, etc. Although, those are not the real reasons to behave like that, there is something beyond which is called fear.

It is important to point out that we can also find the issue of society and relationships from the point of view of literature and poems. Some famous writers talk about society in their pieces of writing, where they point out to ideas such as discrimination, differences between women and men and relationships, among others. For example, Virginia Woolf in her essay “A room of one’s own” she refers to the difference that exists between women and men in terms of studies and work possibilities, women underestimation by men, etc. However, Virginia Woolf states that there are no differences and women and men have the same abilities to write and to develop as a professional. Therefore, we can say that she is a great reference of stating how good women can be without the supervision of men and that women can be even better than men. Besides, she tries to affirm that if women and men complement both talent and aptitudes to write it could create a perfect piece of work.

Also, we can identify the topic of society and relationships in W. H Austen’s poems, especially in September 1st 1939 where despite of talking about war we can identify some other interesting topics. For instance, this poem refers to life in times of war and how people feel it from their own experience. This pints out to the idea of corruption and abuse in which people are immersed and how they have to live and relate each other in that context. Besides, there exists a wish of freedom at the same time of a wish of rebellion in order to figure out the best ways to solve the problem of war. After that, it is necessary to re state the relationships between people, which had been devastated as well as the freedom and peace.

In conclusion, we can say that society is full of relationships; since the example of teachers and students to the differences between men and women. Poetry scientifically refers to that kind of important issues, where writers try to achieve everything in order to give sense to what is happening in the world. Everything is based on what they perceive from their point of view or reality. Virginia Woolf and W.H Austen are very important authors and referents of poetry and how it could be a mirror of society and relationships.

"A room of one's own"

Virginia Woolf's essay "A room of one's own" let us think about many interesting topics, such as the difference between men and women and society relationships, among others.
It is really interesting to see how Virginia Woolf goes beyond the letters of books and tries to focus on the real intentions of the authors. She tries to give us another point of view of what we read. For instance, she refers to the difference between men and women stating that both have the same ability to express themselves in daily life as in writing. Besides, she argues that if women and men put in their writings both parts of the brain, either women using their male part of the brain or men the other way around.
On the other hand, she talks about the society behavior in terms of relationships. For example, Virginia refers to that saying that people do not care about others problems or feelings. Everybody is concerned about their own things even though they live in groups and communities. Society would be better if all of us live connected with the other. I really think that this "problem" is still happening nowadays, and we should do something with starting by ourselves.

Correcting posts . . .

During the Victorian age, life was so difficult for people, specially for children and woman. Actually we can realize about that throughout the movie "Oliver Twist" and the short story of "The signal-man".
Poverty is the strongest theme that represent the Victorian age, because it shows that people used to live in poor conditions without rights and possibilities to make progress with their lives and to assure the life of their descendants.
It is very sad to see that reality of children in the movie Oliver Twist, because children are innocent creatures and they need to grow up in a fair society, in a clean world and obviously where nobody cold ignore them and make them suffer.
In the story of the signal-man we can notice a huge imagination of the author where the reader can be involved in the story leaving apart that those ideas of ghosts are not part of the reality and think that it may could be true.

Frankenstein = Mary Shelley

I really think that the story of Frankenstein and the life of Mary Shelley have a lot in common. First of all, she did not have a "normal" life because of her family and her problems as a child and as a woman. In the case of the monster it was not created to live a "normal" life.
Secondly, the author of the article tries to emphasize the idea that Mary Shelley in some way wanted to express what she was living at that moment and what she used to be during her life. She did it through out the personification of that horrible monster in Frankenstein.
Mary Shelley was an educated woman, who during her whole life was looking for new information and increasing her knowledge. On the other hand the monster was created to be intelligent and to know a lot of things. Those are similarities that really let us interpret that the monster is a reflection of the author Mary Shelley.

It is very interesting that some authors write their own life stories hided behind the characters' story. I think that it is a great idea of hiding your story and let the reader interpret it and find out that it actually is the author's own story.

T.S Eliot and "The Waste Land"

In classes we could observe a picture where everybody said what we can rescue from it and what it makes us feel. Well, there were different perceptions; loneliness, darkness, desolation, love, rubbish, sadness. Those descriptions have in common the idea of "bad" things, because the picture does not show the opposite and let think think that there is nothing else.
If we put the idea of the image with the poem "The Waste Land" from T.S Eliot I can find that image reflected in the V part of the poem, which is called "What the Thunder said". In the first part of that sonnet appear the idea of what happened after a great storm, and if we looks carefully at the picture we could see that there are hindrance and rubbish everywhere. But, among those all rubbish we can find life expressed throughout the two people in the back of the image. In the case of the poem we can see that in an specific part there is named water, but saying that there is not water:
"Here is no water but only rock
Rock and no water and the sandy road"

Here happens the same thing as in the image. The fact that there is no water it means that there is no life, because water is the essential element of life. So, we can conclude that the poem and the image reflect the ideas of destruction and death.

The Invisible Japanese Gentlemen

The story of The Invisible Japanese Gentlemen let me think about many aspects that we face nowadays in our daily life. For example, when we are traveling by metro or bus we do not realize about our environment and people who are near to us. Most of times we are only focused on our problems and life and we do not care about anything else. In the story we can see the same thing. The girl was only concentrated in her business. I really think that she never realized that there were a group of eight Japanese men eating in the same restaurant seated next to her. Besides, I think that if the Japanese gentlemen would receive a glance or a sign from the couple (the girl and her fiancé) that gave them the idea to say hello, they should have done it very gently. But the couple was not able to do that.

If the girl wanted to become a writer she should have the power or the ability of noticing and observing what happens around her. I think that she would have had a great story form the Japanese gentlemen, but may be she did not have the real interest of being a writer, or may be she had to develop her “ability”.

Odour of Chrysanthemus

About this story I could say there are many interesting words which make me think that every age is represented by important issues. For example, there appears poverty, loneliness, addictions, social problems and prohibitions. That is very representative of a society. The idea of that family in the story, which was almost destroyed by those problems, makes us think that everybody can face this kind of situation, but the solution is in realizing about that and try to solve those problems.

Here the image of woman is very important, because they become the main character in the story, where women are the ones in charged of maintain a family alive, which not necessary means by money.

The rocking- horse winner

I think that every story give us main ideas of itself throughout important and significant words. This story makes me feel the sad idea o ambition which is essential in the story of the child and his mother. Sometimes, that ambition is so big that does not give more space for love and time for other important things.

May be the mother in this story should gave more importance to her son, when he asked her for more attention because it might change a lot of thing in their life and it could had helped them to achieve what they wanted.

Frankenstein Essay

Throughout this essay I will try to make the reader understand about the historical overlook of the story of “Frankenstein”, a general background of the author Mary Shelley and some interpretations that a reader could have about the story and some comparison with the author’s own life. Besides, this essay tries to make the reader think beyond words and imagine his own life and it interpretations.

The story of this eccentric creature was writing in a historical context which was characterized by the less participation of women in society, not having education and not having the opportunity to work and only being housewives. Besides, this period of the XVIII century (1818) was very plentiful of written works like novels and poems, and the beginning of many important writers such as Jane Austen and obviously Mary Shelley. The industrial revolution was also a characteristic of this period where the technological advances and uses were rapidly increasing.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born in a very literate family. Her parents were people committed with society; her mother was a feminist and her father was a philosopher. Besides, she was the wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley who was a romantic poet. Mary Shelley’s life was full of difficult moments, such as the dead of her mother when she born, the second wedding of her father, the suicide of the first wife of Percy Shelley, financial problems and the dead of their first child, among others. All those hard problems made her feel that there was no way to understand why she had to pass through those difficulties. In that moment, she found the way to express what she was feeling about her own life, and she did it writing about the story of the monster in “Frankenstein”.

The nightmare that Mary Shelley had once about a young man who created a monster and then leaving it after realizing that it was a completely madness creation, was the origin of her master piece “Frankenstein”.

This story lets the reader having important interpretations of it. This story lets know that it has many aspects of the author’s own life. That is why it is important to have an idea about the background of the author in order to know why some facts are mentioned or what was the intention of the author while she wrote the story.

The main character of the story is a monster which was created by a young scientist. When that young man realized that the monster was horrible and without any sense in life, he decided not to have anything to do with that horrible creation. That event of the story is the representation of Shelley’s nightmare. When the monster noticed that he was alone, he decided to explore the world and try to find answers to his doubts about himself and the society. Moreover, the monster felt that society was so hard to live in because he usually received rejection from others and prohibition to do what he wanted to do. The monster knew a lot because he was created to be intelligent. Here, the reader can figure out that Shelley felt the same as the monster. During her life she had difficulties to study because in those times where she lived, it was not common to see literate women and what she used to do was not considered correct, but she still was an educated woman.

In addition, it is interesting to say that the story of that unnamed creature shows that the fact of not having a name let you think immediately about Mary Shelley’s life. She used to feel that she did not belonged to anywhere and her origins were kind of weird because she did not know her mother, her father got marry with another woman, etc.

The monster was vegetarian as well as Mary and her husband. Here, we can see a clear assimilation between the author’s life and the life of the main character of the story.

I think the theme of suicide is very relevant in the story, but it is difficult for me to interpret it. I could think that the monster decided to commit suicide by burning himself. That represents that Shelley wanted to eliminate those bad characteristics of her life. On the other hand, I could say that she wanted to say that suicide is not the best way to avoid problems and that we have to confront them, not as the first wife of Shelley’s husband did while she was pregnant. Here we can notice that there could be many interpretations of the story.

Finally, it is very important to point out that the fact that the creator of the monster, Victor Frankenstein, run away from his creation has a lot to do with the idea that several women in those times had with pregnancy and birth. In those times it was so difficult to have babies because there were no sources to receive them and most of them born premature and most of times they and their mothers died. May be, Shelley wanted to represent the lost of her first son and the fear of loosing another one, with the creation of the monster and the abandon of the scientist of it.

In conclusion, I can say that the story of the monster in “Frankenstein” is full of wide ideas of life and death, intelligence, imagination, etc. where the reader can build his own idea of the text and may be he could start to think about his own life and how people can interpret it. The story and its historical background and the author’s life let the reader know that the times of Mary Shelley were difficult as well as her own life, which is represented in the story as part of that horrible monster.

Keats's sonnets...

I really think that it is very easy to find romanticism characteristics in every poem, especially in the ones which are closely related to this time of history.

First of all the main characteristic of romanticism that we can find in those sonnets is nature. For example it is represented in the first sonnet with the following sentence:

“Hold like rich garners the full ripen'd grain;”

That sentence makes me think that nature is so important that it will always be the essential element of romantic poems, because nature is so full of feelings and interpretations that the reader can go beyond those simples words and focus on what they really want to mean.

The second sonnet also set nature as an important element of romanticism, but also it is combined with another element that really called my attention; death. For instance, the next part of the sonnet incorporates both, nature and death:

“My spirit is too weak; mortality
Weighs heavily on me like unwilling sleep,
And each imagined pinnacle and steep
Of godlike hardship tells me I must die
Like a sick eagle looking at the sky.”

I think that the theme which is closest to Keats’s lived experience is death and intelligence. He during his life was really close to death and poorness, so that is why his sonnets are related to that. Besides he studied medicine, which I think is the main aspect why he incorporates the brain, pain and books.

Coleridge: Nature and Poetry

I think that even though Samuel T. Coleridge wrote his poem " Kubla Khan: Vision in a Dream" being high, it is a great and very symbolic poem. Poetry is represented in simple things, like nature and human thoughts and affections. We can find those characteristics in Coleridge's poem, and it is very noticeable that the representation of nature is focused on, for example, the greenish that we can find in many places, love and death.

Also poetry makes us feel beyond the written words and makes us be able to put ourselves into the poem’s own history. For example when Coleridge says:

“But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill
athwart a cedarn cover!

A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!”

By those lines I can see religion ideas which are mixed with love conceptions. It really incorporates simple elements such as chasm, hill and moon, which are very characteristic of poetry.

I truly believe that imagination plays an important role in poetry. When you write it and when you read it. Those quotations try to make us think beyond words, and Coleridge's poem allows us to flow our minds...
